Pristina, Kosovo - About 300 ethnic Serb police officers in Kosovo were taken off the payroll Friday for failing to show up for work after Kosovo declared independence from Serbia.
Nearly a third of Serbs left the Kosovo Police Service (KPS) days after the February 17 declaration of independence, saying they were under pressure.
A three-month suspension with pay ran out Friday morning.
The KPS inspectorate recommended an end to paid suspension ’since those who wanted to get back to the KPS had the chance to show up to work’ by 8 am Friday, police spokesman Veton Elshani said.
More than 500 ethnic Serbs remain on the Kosovo police force, which is mostly drawn from the ethnic Albanian majority. KPS said the door remains open for their suspended colleagues.
‘Our colleagues are considered as employees of the KPS, and until further changes, we continue to call upon them to get back to their work,’ Elshani said.
More than 40 countries have recognized Kosovo’s independence, including the United States and most of the European Union. Serbia and its ally Russia have refused, calling the secession illegal.
