Average family spends 40 pct of income on food, Tanjug

BELGRADE — The average family of three in Serbia spends over 40 percent of its income on food and beverages, a new report shows.

The figure is indicative of the low standard of living in the country, Market Research Institute (IZIT) associate Saša Đogović said Monday.

If housing expenses and utility bills are added, the percentage is at 55, he said.

The average net income in Serbia cannot cover the cost of the standard basket of consumer goods, and cannot cover even the minimum living expenses, according to IZIT figures for February.

The average net salary in Serbia in March was RSD 30,800, 2.1 pct less than in February and 13.2 pct less than in December 2007, IZIT said.

Retail prices were up by 1.1 pct in April compared to March.
