NATO ‘Won’t Tolerate Kosovo Violence’, Balkan Insight

May 9, 2008 on 10:05 am | In In Focus, Kosovo & Metohija, News in English |

08 May 2008 Pristina _ No violence will be tolerated in Kosovo, a NATO commander for the peacekeeping troops in Kosovo says.

General John Davoren, who is in command of the American sector of NATO-led peacekeeping troops, KFOR operation said the situation remains calm despite security concerns related to the upcoming Serbian elections in Kosovo and the border dispute between Kosovo and Macedonia.

“The American KFOR in East Multi-National Brigade as well as our battalion situated in Mitrovica region will not tolerate any kind of violence,” General Davoren said.

He was speaking as Serbia’s local elections, which are opposed by both Kosovo’s government and the United Nations Mission in Kosovo, UNMIK are set to take place on May 11.

Davoren said that KFOR will not allow any violence before, during and after Serbian elections in Kosovo.

He also commented on recent reports that masked gunmen were seen at the border between Kosovo and Macedonia, saying that KFOR will undertake all necessary measures to ensure a safe environment.

Teams of Kosovo and Macedonian negotiators have launched discussions to find a solution to the disputed border between the two countries which was marked in 2001 between Belgrade and Skopje when Kosovo was under UN administration. Pristina has contested the demarcation ever since.

Kosovo villagers living near the Macedonia border fear that around 2500 hectares of their land could end up in Macedonia, as was envisaged in the 2001 agreement.

“There are challenges ahead, such as the demarcation of the border but KFOR conducts operations in the entire region so that the situation is kept under control,” General Davoren added.

  1. Put a Russian air base in Serbia and you will be amazed at what NATO will tolerate. Their strategy is always based on supremacy in the air. They have
already formulated plans for bombing Serbia again. If Kosovo is attacked. These plans would be scraped after the first sweep of Russian fighters
across Serbian air space. Europe won’t support a conflict with Russia. The American elites won’t risk it. Russia can test NATO’s real intentions
in Serbia. It’s up to the government of Serbia to approach the Russian government.
