When I was in Israel last May, a Serbian monk named Father Jovan Culibrk told me that every Spanish soldier he spoke with in Kosovo told him, as many American ones did, “We were told to protect Albanians from Serbs. But it turned out it was Serbs who needed protecting from Albanians.” I recently mentioned Spain in reference to an article that appeared in a Spanish paper, titled “Mistake called Kosovo“:
MADRID - One of Spain’s most influential dailies says that Kosovo’s independence is imminent, and wrong. “Kosovo will soon declare independence, with the backing of Germany and the United States, despite the fact that the border change was not in keeping with international law, nor EU practice, and Spain is not heard or listened to by anyone in the EU,” ABC’s said today in an editorial.
This week the excellent “Allah’s Willing Executioners” blog by Fred Alan Medforth in Germany alerts us to an article in the Spanish daily “El Mundo”:
Spain to Withdraw from Kosovo Province
Spain should terminate its participation in the KFOR mission, said on Wednesday the influential Spanish El Mundo daily, which also said that the majority of Spaniards were urging their country’s withdrawal.
…
KFOR-From Peacekeepers to Occupiers“Since the authorities in Kosovo unilaterally declared independence, KFOR’s task has completely changed,” El Mundo said.
“The mission at this moment has no legal basis. It was initially envisaged that KFOR would be a peacekeeping mission in the region, and there was no plan for it to become an occupation force that should subjugate the Serbian minority to the ethnic Albanian majority and to a policy of fait accompli,” the daily said.
Spain has over 100 troops in Kosovo-Metohia province as part of NATO’s contingent. The Pristina separatists announced independence unilaterally, which has been recognized by some European countries, but not by others, among which Spain remains firm in refusing to legitimize Washington-imposed dismemberment of sovereign UN member state.
