MPs ask govt to follow U.N. resolutions on Kosovo, ČTK

Prague, Feb 6 (CTK) - The Czech lower house of parliament passed a resolution Wednesday recommending to the government that it proceed in harmony with the international law and resolutions of the U.N. Security Council during negotiations about the future status of the Serb province of Kosovo.

The Chamber of Deputies’ resolution, pushed through by the opposition Social Democrats (CSSD) and Communists (KSCM), says that not all alternatives have been exhausted during talks about the future of Kosovo.

The Chamber of Deputies’ resolution is not binding on the government.

Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg said in a debate with deputies that the Czech Republic should proceed in line with the majority of EU countries.

They key role in this respect will be played by the members of the contact group for Kosovo, that is Britain, Germany, France and Italy, he said.

These countries are in favour of recognising the independence of Kosovo.

If the Czech Republic stands against the majority opinion of the EU, it may endanger its trustworthiness and harm its diplomatic credit for the period when it will chair the EU, that is the first half of 2009, Schwarzenberg said.

The CSSD and KSCM deputies, on the contrary, warned against the Czech Republic approving of the independence of Kosovo.

“If we do not hold the scales even and use the same standards, small countries will wonder in the future. It is strange if we use different measures for, for example, Turkey, which has recently sent its troops to northern Iraq, than in the case of Serbia and Kosovo Albanians,” shadow foreign minister Lubomir Zaoralek said.
