Recognition of Kosovo’s independence to damage Russia-EU ties, Itar-Tass

February 8, 2008 on 8:58 am | In Kosovo & Metohija, News in English |

BRUSSELS, February 7 (Itar-Tass) - The recognition of Kosovo’s independence by European countries will have negatives consequences for a Russia-EU political dialogue.

Vladimir Chizhov, Russia’s ambassador to the European Union, said on Wednesday that Russia wouldn’t recognize independent Kosovo should it declare its independence and wouldn’t agree to its membership of international organizations, including the United Nations and the OSCE. As a result, the practical effect of Kosovo’s independence will be minimal and its political contacts will be limited only to countries that will have recognized it.

Chizhov said the situation around Kosovo wouldn’t affect Russian gas deliveries to Europe. “Gas was supplied even in the hardest years of the ‘cold war’. We don’t mix politics with economy,” Chizhov emphasized.

He said that the recognition of Kosovo by foreign countries would create a negative precedent that will undermine the U.N. authority and will deal a blow to the basic principle of inviolability of borders.

Chizhov said that there was shaky legal framework for sending a civilian EU mission to Kosovo because it actually violates the 1999 U.N. Security Council resolution on Kosovo No. 1244.
