PARIS — Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Janša believes the EU will be capable of solving the Kosovo issue by June next year.
June is also the month when the Slovenian EU presidency, set to start on January 1, ends.
“It is important for the European Union to demonstrate that it is ready to react and send a strong signal to the whole region, Serbia in particular, that there is a European future,” Janša told Paris daily Le Monde.
“We need to undertake concrete steps in the coming months in order to enable for an EU mission, and find ways to contribute to the region’s economic stability,” the head of the Slovenian government said, commenting on Brussels’ announcements regarding its future mission to Kosovo, a move opposed by Belgrade and Moscow.
He said that Serbia’s stand on the mission was no surprise, but added Slovenia “does not expect a military operation” in answer to EU plans.
Janša also told the newspaper that “particular attention” needs to be paid to countries neighboring Kosovo, “especially Macedonia, where Albanians make up a large portion of the population”.
