Kosovo Muslim separatists reject pay-off, Serbianna

October 31, 2007 on 12:46 pm | In Kosovo & Metohija, News in English |

The so called prime minister of Kosovo Albanian separatists, Agim Ceku, has rejected possible offer of a pay-off by United States rumored to range in billions of dollars in exchange for postponing their independence demand for 12 years.

“If someone has such ideas, my reply would be that even a 12-day delay beyond December 10 would be too much, let alone 12 years,” Çeku said. “For us independence is simply not for sale.”

Agim Ceku is an unindicted war criminal who took part in ethnic cleansing campaigns of Serbs in Croatia in the 1990s as a volunteer officer in the Croatian army.

Possibility of a pay-off was reported by a Kosovo Albanian separatist paper Express citing an unnamed official with the State Department.

Head of the US Office in Pristina, Tina Kaidanow, however, did not comment on the allegations made by Express. She reiterated the standing American position that the talks deadline is December 10.

Skender Hyseni, a spokesman for the Muslim separatist negotiating team, said yesterday that Kosovo Albanian institutions will be fully prepared to declare independence unilaterally but said that Albanian separatists have not been in contact with any Western powers with whom they wish to coordinate their unilateral independence declaration.

Over the weekend, President of Albania appealed to Egypt for an independence recognition and urged Cairo to mobilize the Muslim world to en masse recognize Kosovo separatist state. Both Albania and Kosovo separatists are Muslims.

In an interview with German radio Deutsche Welle, Wolfgang Ischinger, the EU envoy to the negotiating Troika that is conducting Kosovo status talks, said “that unilateral steps can be taken, if we do not reach any results”.

Slovenian Prime Minister, Janez Jansa, opposed unilateral proclamation and recognition of Kosovo’s independence, saying that such action would lead to destabilization of the region and cause new and difficult divisions within the EU.

Cyprus and several other European states are already on record that they will veto any EU proposal to recognize Kosovo.

Slovenia is set to take over the European rotating presidency and insists that unilateral recognition of independence by powerful international factors would represent a huge challenge to the unity in the EU and dangerously increase tensions in the entire region.

Kosovo assembly decides against status debate

PRIŠTINA — The assembly in Priština Tuesday withdrew a proposal to debate issues linked to the province’s status.

The move prompted Kosovo Premier Agim Ceku to voice his disappointment, since the item removed from the agenda was a proposal to debate a document of the Kosovo negotiating team on regulating relations with Serbia, within the negotiating process on Kosovo’s future status.

Albanian-language media in Priština reported that assembly deputies decided not to debate issues relating to the political process during the election campaign, including the proposal from the Kosovo negotiating team.

The Democratic Alliance of Kosovo, the largest group in the assembly, was against debating the document and other issues relating to status.

Parliamentary and local elections in Kosovo are scheduled for November 17.

  1. Kosovo assembley refused to vote on independence I dont know what this means . But I do remember the Kosovo assembley voted on giving up the special autonomy that Milosevic took away from them . They voted in favor of giving up their autonomy by a voting about 90% in favor of giving up this autonomy . I assume that the 10% that refused to give up this autonomy were the KLA . So i believe that in 1989 the majority Albanians believed their future was in Serbia .
Now after the NATzO intervention I thought it was almost opposite . but maybe not .
