MEDEVCE, BELGRADE — A Kosovo conference is acceptable only if held under the UN aegis, President Boris Tadić said Monday.
He was reacting to yesterday’s statement from EU’s Contact Group Troika envoy, Wolfgang Ischinger, who introduced the possibility of holding an international conference on Kosovo.
“The entire negotiating process started in the UN Security Council and it will end there as well,” Tadić said as he toured Medevce army base in southern Serbia.
“The modalities of the negotiating process are dictated by Belgrade, Priština and the international factors. And I would like to stress that the UN Security Council is the sole international structure under the auspices of which the negotiating process can legitimately and legally unfold,” Tadić concluded.
Also on Monday, Minister for Kosovo Slobodan Samardžić (DSS) echoed the presient’s sentiment on the issue when he said that the Kosovo negotiating process must remain strictly within the United Nations.
“Our side is not thinking about an international conference at all. Kosovo and Metohija is within a process of negotiations that is strictly under UN auspices, under the control of the Security Council, and it is being implemented operatively by the Contact Group and the Troika in the negotiations.”
“And that is the framework and format that will remain, as far as we are concerned, until the question of Kosovo and Metohija is resolved,” Samardžić said in a statement carried by Tanjug news agency.
“Therefore, that is the framework and format that guarantees the United Nations will constantly be taking care about the resolving of this question, and that it will be resolved within Resolution 1244.”
“No special international conference could resolve the question of Kosovo and Metohija,” he said.
There has been specualtion about such a possibility lately, Samardžić said said, but “everything that is outside the UN framework is out of the question and our side absolutely rejects it.”
