MOSCOW/VIENNA. July 26 (Interfax) - The Kosovo problem remains under the aegis of the UN, and the territory’s final status will be determined by the UN Security Council, a source close to the Contact Group on Kosovo told Interfax.

The Contact Group convened for its first session on Wednesday after a draft resolution on Kosovo was discussed at the UN Security Council and later withdrawn by the West. The Contact Group comprises Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Italy.

“The Contact Group’s meeting des not mean the Kosovo problem has been removed from under the United Nations’ aegis. Discussion on Kosovo’s future will remain in the competence of the UN, and the territory’s final status will be determined by the UN Security Council,” the source said.

“Resolution 1244 remains in force, and many of its provisions have yet to be fulfilled. Today’s discussion focused on the modality of further talks between Belgrade and Pristina,” he said.

It is important that the parties realize the necessity of talks with international mediation, the source said.

“The Contact Group is expected to urge the parties to restart talks without any rigorous timeframe and work out a compromise,” he said.
