Kosovo Albanians to step up effort in seeking Europe’s support for independence, Associated Press

PRISTINA, Serbia (AP) -Kosovo’s leaders are to step up diplomatic efforts to win support for independence for the breakaway Serbian province, officials said Wednesday.

Kosovo’s President Fatmir Sejdiu and opposition leader Hashim Thaci are slated to meet German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Berlin on Friday.

In addition, Sejdiu and Kosovo’s prime minister, Agim Ceku, are scheduled to go to Brussels, Belgium next week for a meeting with European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana and EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn.

Kosovo’s leaders are under increasing pressure to deliver on promises of securing independence from Serbia after over a year of fruitless negotiations with Belgrade and months of delay in tabling a resolution at the United Nations Security Council that would pave the way for a new state in Europe.

Serbia is strongly opposed to Kosovo’s independence, and Belgrade’s traditional ally Russia is opposing a U.N. resolution that would make the province independent.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said on Monday that the Security Council should act without further delay in implementing the U.N. proposal to grant Kosovo internationally supervised independence,

But he said it was crucial that Russia support the plan. As a permanent Security Council member, Russia has threatened to veto any resolution that would remove Kosovo from Serb territory.

Kosovo has been under U.N. and NATO administration since a 1999 NATO-led air war halted a Serb crackdown on ethnic Albanian separatists.

  1. You make it sound like only Russia is in favor of not breaking up countries at E U whims . The Eu. is not God yet , even if they have United States on their side . So these Natzo countries need big fines and a good stiff punishment for violating almost evrey united nations treaty and law . If United Nations laws mean nothing to them . They should be thrown out .

  2. maybe Kosovo has been under United nations rule and North atlantic treaty organisation military , nato is not UN . But might be more E U.
This nato was established as a defensive military more to contain the Warsaw pact . As the warsaw miltary disapeared . NATO has more or less taken on a uncontested offensive role . In Yugoslavia’s problems natzos air force helped insure minorities could take more from the majoity than they would have been able to take by themselves . Its real easy to give somthing away that is not yours . This is why they have been honnered more than they deserve . Natzo like the nazi’s before them never were really tested untill they came into Serbia and Russia , And this is were they were defeated . let hope they get turned around again .
