Position: Employment Intern
Reports to: Employment Counselors
Hours: 16-20 hours per week for 4-5 month period
Summary:
World Relief - Chicago assists with the resettlement of refugees by providing cultural adjustment and employment services, English Language Training, mental health services and programs for children. This position assists refugees in adapting to the American culture and employment environment so that they may eventually become self-sufficient. The intern will gain knowledge of the refugee resettlement process and will work as a supporter and advocate for refugees in their job search. World Relief- Chicago is located at 3507 W. Lawrence in Chicago. This is not a paid internship.
Duties:
• Assist employment counselors with taking refugees on job trips and helping them complete job applications
• Assist employment counselors with paperwork completion and communication with service providers
• Assist employment counselors in providing cultural orientation trainings for refugees once a week (intern will be trained and provided with materials)
• Attend weekly Resettlement department meetings and provide updates on work with current refugee clients
• Complete research project related to cultural backgrounds of new refugee populations, if time permits
• Take part in additional tasks in the Resettlement Department, if time permits
Qualifications:
• Willingness to work in social service environment
• A strong interest in humanitarian issues
• Sensitivity to other cultures and backgrounds
• Preferred education and/ or experience in International Relations or International Studies, Business Administration or related field
• Language skills helpful
